Golden Gate Park isn’t just a park - it’s San Francisco’s great escape, a sprawling green world that has drawn dreamers, locals, and travelers for more than 150 years. Larger than New York’s Central Park, it stretches three miles from the edge of Haight-Ashbury all the way to the Pacific Ocean, weaving together lakes, meadows, gardens, museums, and trails.
But what makes Golden Gate Park truly extraordinary is its history. Before the first tree was planted, this was a windswept sea of sand dunes known as the “Outside Lands.” Many believed it was impossible to tame. Yet in the 1870s, city leaders called on engineer William Hammond Hall and gardener John McLaren to make the impossible real. Over decades of planting, irrigation, and design, they transformed barren dunes into forests, gardens, and cultural landmarks. McLaren, who oversaw the park for decades, once vowed it should be “all trees and grass, with as little brick and mortar as possible.”
The result is a place that has hosted everything from world’s fairs and rock concerts to quiet Sunday picnics. It’s where San Franciscans come to celebrate, to protest, to grieve, and to breathe. And now, you can experience it all for yourself with our free self-guided Golden Gate Park walking tour.
Here are just a few of the unforgettable locations you’ll see along the way:
Hippie Hill Once the heartbeat of San Francisco’s counterculture, this grassy slope still echoes with the music, protests, and free-spirited gatherings of the 1960s.
Conservatory of Flowers A gleaming Victorian glasshouse filled with rare orchids, giant water lilies, and plants that look like they’ve been pulled from another world.
Stow Lake & Strawberry Hill Circle the shimmering lake, cross stone bridges, and climb to the summit for waterfalls and sweeping views of the city and Golden Gate Bridge.
Bison Paddock Yes, real American bison still roam here - a tradition dating back to the 1890s that adds a touch of the wild to this urban oasis.
